Write your resume the right way.

How to Prepare a Resume

Your resume needs to be professional and polished, because if you don't have a professional resume, it probably isn't going to get a second glance from any hiring manager. Your resume needs to be easy to read. Avoid tiny fonts, big blocks of text, and inconsistent formatting.

Resume types.

When creating your resume use an appropriate style, use one that is appealing but not to busy. If your resume is to busy, the employers won't even bother looking at it.

  • A chronological resume is an organized resume where all of your work history is listed in order, by dates. You should always begin with your current position and end with the earliest. Many employers prefer this type of resume because it gives them an overview of your work history.

  • functional resume focuses on your skills and experience and it doesn't highlight your work history as much. This resume type is preferable is you have lapses in your work history. It is beneficial to new graduates who have limited employment experience.

  • A combination resume highlights both your skills and traits and provide a chronological listing of your work experience. This resume type gives the employer an entire view of what kind of employee you are. For this type of resume, you should only list the things that might qualify you for the job. Don't make your resume to lengthy.

Make it legible.

You want your resume to be easy to read. Your employer should be able to go through it quickly and absorb all of your skills and achievements.

  • Use legible fonts, such as: Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri.

  • Make sure your font is not to big.

  • Avoid using fonts that are bigger than 12.

  • Make sure there is enough white space so that you can easily scan your resume.

  • Avoid using colored paper, that can be very distracting. Instead use white or cream colored paper if you are going to send a physical hard copy.

Be consistent.

Professional resumes need to have a consistent theme. For example, if you used a bullet to describe an accomplishment, you need to use a bulleted list for all of your accomplishments. Also, make sure that you use the same bullet formatting throughout your whole resume.

Keep it focused.

It is important not to include irrelevant information. Only include the information that is centered around your job. For example, don't put that you won your fifth grade spelling bee, instead put that you were an intern for a bank in accounting, assuming that you want to be an accountant. This shows your employer that you are experienced in that job.

Carefully edit your resume.

Before submitting your resume to a potential employer, make sure you review your resume and check for any grammatical or spelling errors.
