How to Prepare a Cover Letter

A cover letter is a letter sent with your resume. It contains information about you and your abilities.

 

Contact information.

  • At the top of your cover letter, include:

    • Your contact information.

    • Your employer's contact information

 

Introduction.

 

 

 

 

 

Conclusion.

The final paragraph should inform them that you would love to be interviewed.

  • Tell the employer that you will be in touch with them if you don't hear back from them within a weeks time.

  • Thank them for spending time to read your cover letter.

  • End with your salutation.

Cover letter examples.

  • Introduce your employer as "Dear Sir or Madam". It sound professional and shows that you care who you are talking about.

  • Introduce yourself and include the job your are applying for and how you found the opportunity.

  • Briefly present basic info about yourself, including:

    • Degree

    • Area of study/expertise

    • Your career goals in terms of how they align with the goals of the company.

 

Sell yourself.

The second paragraph should respond directly to the job description.

  • You should describe your previous job descriptions, skills and abilities that will meet the company's needs. 

  • To go the extra mile, list some of the companies goals in your cover letter and explain how you could meet that goal.
